Ovechkin’s rookie season of 2005-06 season was
wrought with anticipation,
as having lost his first NHL season due to the NHL lock-out, he would
be
starting in league at the same time as Sidney Crosby, yet another first
overall
phenom who was a year younger. Ovechkin didn’t allow the
Sidney Crosby hype to
get to him, and he finished with the lead in rookie points with 52 goals and 54
assists, one of the
highest rookie tallies in recent memory. Ovechkin was also awarded the
Calder
Trophy for NHL Rookie of the Year
